Some scientists believe the landscape around Chillagoe began to form about 400 million years ago, when limestone was deposited as calcareous mud and coral reefs on the bed of a shallow sea where Chillagoe is today. Subsequent tilting, folding and erosion exposed and weathered the limestone that today towers over the surrounding plains. Fluctuating groundwater levels slowly dissolved some of the limestone, creating caverns and passages, some of which have since been decorated by calcite stalactites, stalagmites and flowstones, deposited by surface waters penetrating through the rock.

About Cairns 4WD Tours

About Us

As a local resident in Cairns for about four and a half years I had heard about a particularly beautiful, but challenging 4wd track in the Daintree Rainforest, a good hours drive north of Cairns.
Finally I was able to do the trip.
A wide river crossing and 26km of  real 4wd tracks takes one through pristine rainforest, heading slowly north and coming out at Wujal Wujal, an Aboriginal community in Bloomfield.
At the time I was driving an 18 year old Grand Jeep Cherokee which I had purchased from a German back packing couple a year earlier. I did the trip in September and so it was dry on the track. The old girl did really well, even going down a very steep section known locally as “Big Red”.  This is not for the faint hearted or inexperienced but at the same time was such a thrill.
Needless to say I was hooked!
